Abstract
This Master Thesis develops the concept of Quality of Life as an aggregate measure of people's well-being in a certain country, region, or social stratum. The historical approaches to the quality of life measurement and estimation are given in the intorduction and literature review. The United Nations approach to construction of a numerical measure of human development (human development index) is presented. A simple regression model and ranking according to the principal components of the set of economic and social indicators are proposed as ways to quantify the quality of life given its expert estimates as a training sample. This methodology was found to be an e cient one as indicated by su cient statistical signicance of both models. The success of the model served as a basis for application to rank the regions of Russian Federation according to the first principal component of the set of statistical indicators. Also, Pareto-rankings of both international and Russian observations was proposed as a non-compensatory measure of quality of life
