Abstract

Data on trends in the social stratification of health in Russia show evidence of definite social inequalities in the health of males and females in the post-Soviet period. Improvements in female health in the 2000s, which were observed in the best-off stratum, were conditioned by their overall rise in well-being and expansion of access to good quality fee-based medical services. These factors, however, did not affect males' sense of well-being; even in the relatively well-off stratum no positive changes were observed.
